This is a summary report of a recent UCA research project, which probed in depth to find out what lay behind student responses when they filled in the the questions in the National Student Survey 2013.
The research_, which consisted of focus group interviews with third year students at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham and Rochester took place in March 2013.
The underlying research questions were as follows:
What reasons do students studying arts disciplines provide for the scores they have given to the NSS?
Is there anything distinctive in what students with dyslexia and international students report?
Are there any university-wide issues uncovered by this research?
By understanding why students answer the questions in the ways that they do, it was hoped some university-wide themes would emerge to explain low and high scoring areas. Such data could inform future strategies for student engagement and be useful for all those who contribute to undergraduate students’ experience.
